John K. Hoey
President & CEO
The Y in Central Maryland
Since joining the Y as its CEO in 2006, John has led a transformation of the organization, working with its board and leadership team to grow its impact and revenues by more than three-fold, with a focus of achieving its vision of building a more inclusive and connected Central Maryland community across all its points of access in which Y membership creates a sense of belonging, engagement, empathy, health, and well-being for all.
Prior to the Y, John worked in the private sector across four different industries, while also volunteering his time in the community. He worked for eleven years in the for-profit education industry, playing key roles in the building of a number of successful global and domestic higher education and K-12 businesses, including Sylvan Learning, Educate, Inc., and Laureate Education. He last served as President of Progressus Therapy (a division of then publicly-traded Educate, Inc.), a leading national provider of school-based and early intervention special education services. Previously, John spent eight years in executive positions in various domestic and international consumer businesses at Citigroup (formerly Citicorp).
John has been recognized for his leadership on many occasions, including as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year®, by The Daily Record with an Icon Award, as well as one of the region's Most Admired and Influential CEOs, and as one of Maryland's Innovators of the Year.
John has been an active civic and corporate leader over the years, serving on a number of non-profit and private sector boards. He currently chairs two boards, including the Board of Visitors of the University of South Carolina's College of Arts & Sciences and the Board of Directors of the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.
A native New Yorker, John has lived in Maryland since 1989. He received an undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of South Carolina's Honors College and earned his MBA at the State University of New York at Albany. John resides in Baltimore City with his family.
