CareFirst employee and “Big Sister” Adrienne met her “Little Brother” Joe four years ago through Big Brothers Big Sisters, now a part of the Y and known as “Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Y." As Maryland’s largest volunteer mentoring network, the program makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult mentors and child mentees ages 6-18, and currently serves over 450 vulnerable youth in our community.
Since being matched in October 2013, Adrienne and Joe have met once a week at City Springs Elementary/Middle School where Joe is an eighth grader. Joe seemed shy and hesitant with Adrienne at first, but after spending more time together, Adrienne saw him come out of his shell, and they soon discovered their shared love of puzzles and football.
“I have seen Joe mature into a fine young man. Over time, he has really become comfortable with me. I've shared with Joe that I have a son who is serving our country overseas and Joe always asks and wants to know how he is doing,” says Adrienne.
Adrienne wants nothing to stop Joe from pursuing his dreams.
“I want Joe to continue to believe he is capable of anything and should try new things even when they seem hard or impossible,” says Adrienne.
These words are exactly what mentors are for!
Motivation and encouragement go a long way in a young person’s life, and with a little support, every child can succeed!

If you’re a fan of bowling, join us on Saturday, March 24 at AMF Towson Lanes for Bowl for Kids’ Sake! Sponsored by Whiting-Turner, this fun one-day bowling event raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Y, Maryland’s largest volunteer mentoring network.
Every dollar raised or donated will help match vulnerable children with adult mentors to build and sustain long-lasting and nurturing relationships. With each mentor/mentee match costing approximately $167 a month, your support tells these precious youth that the adults are paying attention, seeing, and valuing them.
