As part of Let's Move! Outside, an initiative launched by the federal Department of Inte
rior and funded by American Express, we are among 50 Y associations across the country selected to develop opportunities to encourage young people to play and learn in the great outdoors and become environmental stewards of our public lands.
Recently, Y leaders from our Reach and Rise mentoring program brought together mentors and mentees from the Y and other mentoring organizations such as Thread, Catholic Charities and Big Brothers Big Sisters for a day of fellowship and community service at Herring Run Park in support of the "Great American Cleanup." More than 70 volunteers participated including families, mentors and mentees of all ages. They focused on two tasks: supporting the park’s anti-litter campaign by removing trash and debris that eventually makes its way in the stream; and after learning proper technique, helping with the removal of invasive weeds needed to keep the park healthy.
Thank you to MECU and many others for sponsoring the event and to Y associates Eric Somerville and Rhea Butler for making it happen!
As Earth Day rallies around the world reminded us this past weekend, it's hard to imagine a more urgent or necessary focus and important value to instill in our young people. And, as the region’s leading youth-serving organization, it’s only natural for the Y to be a catalyst for this imperative.
All the best,
John
