Needless to say, in our current environment those who engage with the Y must have more trust than ever in our safety precautions. We are now moving into the sixth month of “living with COVID-19” here in Maryland (and throughout the country), and while most Y programs and services are open, all of them look and feel different in this environment. People’s expectations around health and safety, always a top priority here at the Y, have understandably grown by orders of magnitude. Additionally, our country has become irretrievably divided around what public health actions should be followed, much less required.
Our approach is simple. We follow the requirements set by state and local health officials (with whom we talk regularly), we constantly reassess what we’re learning and update our procedures accordingly (always trying to err on the side of safety), and we listen to those we serve to ensure that their experience is as safe and comfortable as possible.
Needless to say, we aren’t pleasing “all of the people all of the time.”. However, most people are quite sensible and know that it’s a tough balancing act and appreciate our efforts.
The following are a few verbatim quotes from our most recent daily Listen 360 reports that represent the preponderance of the comments we’re receiving. Take a look:
"You can get in shape anywhere, but being in a place with friendly and helpful people is what makes the Y different. With the wearing of the masks you don't get the smiles, but I know they’re there. Keep up the good work."
"I am so happy to be back in the warm pool with water aerobics class!! I feel so much better when I can be in the pool!! Flexibility, balance, and muscle control are much improved!"
"The camp is safe. My son really needed the social aspect of it. In this time, people really should not have any worries about sending their child to this camp. Thanks."
"Careful preparation and maintenance with regard to cleaning and safety, friendly associates, professionalism.”
"This was our children's first year and we really appreciated the opportunity to have them out in nature with strong masking and public health guidelines like the washing stations. It was necessary for our children to have time with other kids and in nature."
“My camper had a great time and I think the Y made every effort to make the experience fun in spite of the limitations from the virus. Drop off and pick up were well organized. Associates are always friendly."
“We love the St. Johns Y Camp location and have used it for all four of our children. I love the smaller groups and the counselors are fantastic, many who have been there for years!"
I have always appreciated the hard work our associates put forth to create a great Y experience for our members and participants. In this environment, however, when Y associates are being asked to not just follow unprecedented health measures but to also navigate an increasingly divided public, it is really quite a feat. We are asking a lot of our associates, and they are delivering. I and the community truly appreciate and value your hard work and contributions in the most challenging of times.
All the best,
John
